FAQ

My device is showing a security warning when I try to open the app. Is it safe?

It's completely safe. I, as the developer, prioritize your safety. If you want to know more, go to the Privacy Policy (for the Android app only).

Desktop

On Windows:

You will see a Windows SmartScreen dialog when trying to open the installer/app. Click More Info..., then Run Anyway.

On macOS:

Sonoma and older:
First, open the app normally. You should see a warning. Then, right-click and press Open. In that warning dialog, you should now see an extra button called Open. Press it and the app should launch.
Sequoia and newer:
First, open the app normally. You should see a warning. Go to Settings >> Privacy and Security, and then you should see a warning saying "The app SimpliPlay was not allowed to open..., or something similar. Click Open Anyway, enter your username and password, and the app should launch.

On Linux:

This depends on your distro. Try talking with your distro's open-source community to learn more about possible issues with your distro.

Mobile

On Android:

When attempting to install the app, you may see a warning that says For your security, [App name] is not allowed to install unknown apps on this device. If you do, click Settings in that dialog, then toggle the switch Allow installing unknown apps. Depending on your device's firmware, you may see more warnings. For example, if your Android device was manafactured by Xiaomi, you'll see a warning with a red background addressing the dangers of enabling unknown apps.

On iOS:

The iOS app available is only source code. It can't install like any other app because it isn't packaged. Source code just tells a computer what to do in human text. Since computers don't understand human text, it has to be packaged into an app. Apps take your human code and package it as a binary. Binary is a series of 0's and 1's, which computers can understand. To learn more about how to compile the source code (and avoid security warnings that come with), take a look at the Apple Developer website for more info. Please ask a tech geek to be by your side unless you are one, as the website contains complex developer info that you may not know even as an iOS user.

The app loads very slowly. What do I do?

Try restarting your device. If that doesn't work, talk with your device manafacturer's support team, or if you're using an open-source Linux distro or Android version, talk to the open-source community.

The app is being flagged by my antivirus. What do I do?

For the desktop app, follow the instructions here. For the mobile app, refer to the My device is showing a security warning when I try to open the app. Is it safe? section.

Media doesn't play. What do I do?

This depends on the format the media you're playing is in, or your device's hardware. Contact your device manafacturer for hardware issues or take a look at the official list of supported formats.

I can't find the app

Desktop (Windows)

Open File Explorer, and use the file path: C:\Users\[Your username]\AppData\Local\Programs\SimpliPlay (replace [Your username] with your actual username on Windows). If you can't find it, enable hidden items via View > Show > Hidden Items. This file path contains the SimpliPlay app on Windows. Simply use SimpliPlay.exe to launch the app from here. Sometimes, Inno Setup installers are distributed. These installers let you choose where to install the app, and can create shortcuts for easy access. You can either use those shortcuts or take note of the file path you chose.

The lite version doesn't open/close.

If it doesn't open:

If the lite version doesn't open, simply click the app's icon. You should see a file path, like `/Applications/simpliplay-lite-macOS/simpliplay-lite-macos` (this depends on your operating system). If it doesn't open, try moving it to your dock or opening it again. If it still doesn't open, copy the file path from the command line window it opened while failing to open the app, open Command Line or Terminal, and paste the file path there. If that returns an error, try adding missing slashes to the path or a slash at the front (for example, if the path is `Applications/simpliplay-lite-macOS/simpliplay-lite-macos`, try making it `/Applications/simpliplay-lite-macOS/simpliplay-lite-macos`). It should open normally from now on. If it still doesn't work, try reinstalling the app (delete the existing installation folder and replace it with a new copy.) Read the how to use guide for more info.

If it doesn't close:

The lite version will open a terminal window before opening the media player GUI. It is usually black and white and contains text about what the software is doing and developer information. Simply close this window instead.

Your app says my operating system is too old.

Desktop

Operating systems older than Windows 10 or macOS 10.9 (Mavericks) can't run the app (unless you're using the legacy version, which requires a minimum of Windows XP or macOS 10.6), and for Linux distributions, please contact the creators of your distro or talk to the community.

Mobile

Operating systems older than Android 5 can't run the app, it is heavily recommended to use Android 5 or above to use the app, although the app will still work on older Android versions, it may break, so we have set a restriction during installation. And for iOS, the app was tested on an iPhone 16 simulator, so *probably* only a recent range of iPhone devices can run the app (regardless if they work on older versions of iOS because of Apple).

Is 32-bit supported?

Desktop

On desktop, 32-bit operating systems are not supported for the main version of the app. The legacy version for desktop, however, supports 32-bit for operating systems other than macOS, but lacks the same feature set as the main version of SimpliPlay. You can download it here.

Mobile

On Android, yes, 32-bit is supported as well as 64-bit and any processor is too unless you downloaded an ARM64-only build. On iOS, because of Apple, 32-bit operating systems are not supported.
